Nam Ngum 5 Hydropower Station's on-grid power exceeds 400m KWH

As of 14:58 on Dec 3, Nam Ngum 5 Hydropower Station’s on-grid power had exceeded 400 million KWH in 2016, with an aggregate on-grid power of 1.848 billion KWH and 1,463 consecutive days of operation without accidents. This milestone has laid a solid foundation for the annual power generation plan issued by the National Dispatching Center of Laos.

To achieve the task assigned by the annual power generation plan, POWERCHINA Resources Ltd. scientifically organized the production, carefully dispatched water from the reservoir, and effectively used the reservoir’s precious hydropower resources. During the dry season at the beginning of this year, a C-level inspection on the two generator units and preventive tests were conducted on all electric equipment in the power station, with a qualification rate of 100 percent. The company has also been striving for perfection in the daily inspections, maintenance, and servicing of the equipment. During the monthly special inspections, it has also been meticulous in timely discovery and correction of any minor flaw or defect. These measures have ensured good performance of all the main and ancillary equipment throughout the power station, and have supported the efficient and stable operation of the generator units.

This year, the Nam Ngum 5 Hydropower Station faced a special hydrologic pattern with the first part of the year being dry with little rainfall, but with concentrated and heavy rainfall in August. The company therefore coordinated with the National Power Grid of Laos to draft a seasonal power generation plan, optimizing and dispatching the reservoir, and adjusting the power of the generator units according to water availability. Before the rainy season’s heavy rainfall, the reservoir had been kept empty to effectively use the precious hydropower resources, to improve capacity and achieve full potential of the generator units in order to generate more power.

Since its operations began in December 2012, Nam Ngum 5 Power Co., Ltd. has set enhancing supervision and improving all management as its main task, with great results. In April 2016, the production management information system of Nam Ngum 5 Hydropower Station, POWERCHINA’s first overseas power generation IT system, was put into trial operation. In July 2016, Nam Ngum 5 Power Co., Ltd. passed the on-site appraisal of the A-Level Enterprises of Safety Production Standardization for Power Generation, the first subsidiary of POWERCHINA Resources Ltd. to do so. In November 2016, the Nam Ngum 5 Hydropower Station was awarded the distinction “2016 China Construction Engineering Luban Prize (Overseas Projects)”.
