My comments:

One’s roots refer to where one grows up. It can refer to one’s birthplace, where one is bred and brought up, or it may refer to the lifestyle of the place.

Either way, when we say someone is true to his roots we mean to say that he hasn’t forgotten where he came from. For example, if he grew up in a coal mining town, he retains to this day a special fondness for miners and hardworking people in general.

Or if he grew up poor, he is always ready to help the poor today, when he’s rich and successful.

And when people from his hometown meet him, they can say, for instance, that he hasn’t changed – after all these years.
