During the week one of our readers sought clarification regarding the phrase –take the high road. Now there are several ways to interpret this expression but I think it helps if you think of the ‘road’ here in terms of the path, direction or way and in particular in terms of ethics or morality. A quick search online will show you that the high road is often interpreted as
1. "The ethical way” E.g., when you "take the high road" it means doing the right thing even if it’s not popular or easy. 2. "The most positive, diplomatic, or ethical course." Ex.: He took the high road winning the election, instead of paying bribes to corrupt business leaders. 3. Often in England the high road or high street is often the main road 4. It is also used to refer to an easy or certain course: the highroad to success.
