A fascination with Beijing that started over thirty years ago

I would stay far out from downtown at the Friendship Hotel. This was one of the few hotels where foreign travelers could then reside. Situated in what was then suburban Haidian District, it proved to be a truly fascinating location for literally it was where countryside blended with urban. Being summer, there was a rooftop outdoor bar where I would sit looking either towards the Western Hills or over the main urban areas. I loved it!
