The Summer Palace proved another fascinating venue for people watching. City dwellers and groups of domestic visitors having a day out in a very beautiful location, again a public park. Looking back it was interesting to compare the dress of many compared to today. For men, white shirts were common while women often wore quite simple cotton skirts. There was much more a conformity in style for of course the present contemporary affluence was not so obvious in 1987. However China had embarked on a new course the results of which we can now witness nationwide.
