Knowledge of safety risks could prevent tragedies

The organizers of a party at a water park in Taipei have been detained by police for questioning after hundreds were injured, some seriously, when colored powder being sprayed over the partygoers ignited. Comments:

The disaster caused by flammable powder at a recreational venue has rung an alarm bell. The use of colored powder has gained huge popularity in recent years, but many event organizers lack the necessary safety knowledge and fail to take precautions against potential safety hazards. It has been sheer luck that no major accident had happened before. This latest tragedy is a reminder that we need more awareness of public safety.

The colorful corn starch sprayed over the crowd at the recreational water park in Taiwan, once it came in contact with a source of heat, caught fire and caused an explosion. Therefore, high temperatures, smoking and electronic devices that could produce static electricity and sparks should be strictly prohibited at venues where there is a high density of such starch, and spraying water is recommended to increase humidity. Judging by what happened in Taipei, the organizers failed to have any safety measures in place to prevent the powder from exploding. The local authorities should check any potential safety threats in public venues to guarantee a safe environment for local residents and tourists to Taiwan.

It is unnecessary to refrain from using the powder, but it should only be used if the proper safety precautions have been taken. It should be safe to use corn starch carefully, but there should be contingency plans for rescue and evacuation.
