Husband apologizes for online complaint

A 25-year-old bank employee who posted a online complaint about his boring marriage has apologized for hurting his wife's feelings. The man, surnamed Yuan, had married his wife, surnamed Zhou, a year earlier. Zhou read the post on Jan 8 and felt sad as she thought her marriage was a happy one. Yuan then apologized, telling his wife that he wrote the message while in a bad mood. Experts said the couple from Chongqing municipality should be more open in their communications to promote better understanding between them.

Man blames fatal crash on girlfriend

The driver in a fatal car crash tried to blame the wreck on his girlfriend, who was killed when the vehicle struck a roadside flower bed, police said. The man, surnamed Zhang, was drunk when the accident occurred about 1 am on Jan 12, injuring himself and other three men, police said. Zhang said his girlfriend had been driving the car, but officers determined he was at the wheel. Zhang was detained and the crash was being investigated.

The family of a thief who was sentenced in May to seven months in prison for stealing from a villa in Nanjing has received a 10,000 yuan ($1,518) donation from the homeowner. The villa's owner, surnamed Xie, made the donation after learning earlier this month that the thief came from a very poor farming family.

Teacher detained in indecency probe

A 58-year-old teacher at a rural primary school was detained after being accused of acting indecently toward a fifth-grade girl. The girl lives with her grandmother because her parents are migrant workers in another province, according to the education administration bureau in Baoying county. It confirmed the teacher had been detained, but declined to provide additional information because the case is under investigation.

Verdict pending in car bomb case

A man in Nantong went on trial last week on charges of planting a homemade bomb in his wife's car and detonating it as she approached with their 2-year-old daughter in her arms. The man, surnamed Liang, wanted to kill his wife, surnamed Zhu, so he could marry his lover, prosecutors said. He was accused of hiding the bomb in Zhu's car on Feb 5, last year, and using a remote controlled switch to set it off. The explosion injured Zhu, their daughter and Zhu's father. A verdict is pending.

A 27-year-old immigrant was sent back to Vietnam on Jan 10 after she attempted to obtain a marriage certificate with a Chinese man she met in Jiangsu province. The authorities questioned her identity documents when she and the man, surnamed Zhou, applied for the license. The woman promised to return to China and marry Zhou once she is able to obtain a valid visa. Police said she would have to wait at least a year to comply with Chinese law on illegal immigrants re-entering the mainland.

Children sold for drug money returned

Two Vietnamese children who were sold by their father for drug money were returned to their country last week. Police said the father sold his 4-year-old daughter to a couple in South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region for 6,000 yuan in October, and his 2-year-old son for 15,000 yuan in December. Border police rescued the children in early January.

Driver flees after fatal accident

He said he would have earned more than 50,000 yuan if he had sold the drugs.

Grocer identified as murder suspect

A greengrocer in Chongyang county, was identified as a wanted suspect in the 1993 murder of a guard at a supply and marketing cooperative in Shaoyang county, Hunan province. The grocer, Xiang Haijun, formerly the co-op's deputy director, was accused of killing one guard and seriously injuring another while under investigation for economic crimes. Police said Xiang fled with his lover to Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, and finally settled down in Chongyang. He was arrested on Jan 6 after police were tipped off about his identity. The investigation is continuing.

'Fake prostitute' phones police

A 30-year-old woman in Wuyi county called police last week and told them she was a prostitute in order to flee a relative who caught her having an affair at a hotel. The woman, surnamed Song, told police she was a prostitute so she would be taken to the police station. She then told officers she fabricated the prostitution claim after her brother-in-law found her with her lover. Police confirmed her story, but accused her of taking drugs with her lover before going to the hotel. Song was detained while police investigated the drug case.

Shop owner fights off armed thief

A thief armed with a gun and a knife entered a gold shop in Ningbo at closing time and fought with the owner, police said. The attempted robbery happened at about 9 pm on Jan 11. The shop owner, surnamed Shi, was injured in the incident and the gunman fled after firing a shot, which missed. Shi was hospitalized in stable condition. The would-be thief is still at large.

Raped woman commits suicide

A woman in Binxian county committed suicide by swallowing pesticide after she reported she had been raped, but police said there wasn't enough evidence to pursue charges. A man was arrested in Changsha for threatening to kill a nurse who saw him stealing from a hospital locker room on Dec 28. The 53-year-old man, surnamed Zhou, changed his clothes and tried to hide in a ward to avoid detection, but was caught by hospital guards. He was taken to a police station, where he was placed under arrest.
