In the farrier's workshop next to the stables, Zhou Guocheng, a second-year student, gently calmed a horse named Malphite as he carefully fitted its horseshoes. Zhou, who has been learning farriery for a year, aspires to become an equestrian coach or a farrier after graduation. "Although farriery requires a lot of bending over and is tiring, it pays well," he said.
To quickly bond with the horses and understand their temperaments, students spend most of their day bathing them, cleaning out manure, trimming hooves and maintaining the stables.
"Horses are dignified creatures. You need to care for and respect them to build a relationship, so they trust you to ride them," said equestrian coach Nong Xincai.
