Shanghai showcases charms of Jinshan at Sydney Opera House

To promote cultural exchanges between China and Australia, the "Reminiscing Jiangnan — Shanghai Intangible Cultural Heritage Arts Exhibition" kicked off at the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday.

Under the auspices of the Information Office and Foreign Affairs Office of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, and Shanghai United Media Group, the exhibition is co-hosted by China Cultural Center Sydney, Jiefang Daily, and Jinshan District People's Government of Shanghai.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the China-Australia comprehensive strategic partnership. To further enhance the cultural understanding of both sides and promote Shanghai's city image, the 10-day exhibition will showcase a selected collection of Jinshan peasant paintings at the China Cultural Center in Sydney, the first of its kind established in Oceania.

Originating in the 1970s, the Jinshan peasant painting is a folk art in Shanghai's suburban Jinshan district. The paintings are known for the bright depiction of the traditional rural life in Jiangnan, which refers to the region south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The works often features a wide range of striking colors across the canvas, and combined elements from traditional arts, such as paper-cuts, embroidery and knitting.
