China's Zhang Shuai reaches both singles, doubles semis at Birmingham Classic

LONDON - China's veteran Zhang Shuai won both the women's singles and doubles quarterfinals at the Birmingham Classic on Friday.

The 33-year-old defeated Dayana Yastremska from Ukraine 7-5, 6-4 to reach the semifinals in the singles event, facing Romanian Sorana Cirstea for a final berth.

In March, Zhang came from one set down to beat the 22-year-old Yastremska in the final at the Lyon Open, claiming her third career WTA Tour title.

The other semifinal will played between former world No. 1 Simona Halep from Romania and Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia.

Zhang also won the doubles quarterfinal together with Belgian Elise Mertens as the top seeds saw off Romanian pair Monica Niculescu and Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-2, 7-6(2).

The Chinese ace is playing her second grass-court tournament in Britain this season ahead of the Grand Slam showcase Wimbledon Championships.

Last week, Zhang reached the singles quarterfinals at the Nottingham Open and clinched the doubles title together with Haddad Maia.
