China positively responds to financial crisis: experts

ROME: Italian experts have praised China for having responded positively to the international financial crisis, saying that the country has the potential to play a greater global role in the future.

Axel Berkofsky, a researcher at the Milan-based Institute for International Political Studies, told Xinhua that the economic crisis has influenced Chinese exports and growth, but China has responded positively with a series of stimulus packages and policies aimed at expanding domestic consumption and increasing productivity.

"Such measures have reassured the West," he said.

Berkofsky noted that China has contributed to the global stock market revival, which has seen a recent 40-percent rise. He added that China brought its experience to the G20 London summit in April and reassured international markets with its fiscal measures.

The researcher also hailed the Chinese government's tax rebates and incentives to encourage the purchase of farm equipment in an effort to boost domestic consumption and production.

Other Italian experts also believe that China can play a major role in tackling global challenges, including the current financial turmoil and climate change.

Luca La Bella, a China analyst with Rome's International Studies Center, said China can make positive contributions to the dialogue between developed and developing countries.

La Bella said China now serves as a bridge between industrialized and developing economies because of its experience in industrial progress and its natural resources.
