Disappointment shrouds Portugal after World Cup loss

LISBON -- Disappointment was the tone after the Portuguese national soccer team was eliminated from the South Africa World Cup on Tuesday.

Over three million Portuguese watched Portugal's 1-0 loss to Spain in a round of 16 match while many fans gathered on squares and public places to watch the game on giant screens.

In the game which Cristiano Ronaldo didn't shine, the unanimous opinion was that the goalkeeper Eduardo was the best player. Most of the people considered that the coach Carlos Queiroz was responsible for the loss, organizing a defensive team and taking one of the team's best players off the game, Hugo Almeida.

The loss dealt a big blow to many Portuguese fans whose hopes for the championship were high after their team's crushing 7-0 victory over the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the group phase.

For the Spaniards, the place to watch the game was the Spanish embassy in Lisbon. More than 200 people went to the only place in Lisbon where the party was on after the match.
