          Journalists still needed

          China Daily | Updated: 2017-11-09 07:53

Wednesday marked the 18th Journalists' Day in China. It comes at a time, when journalists, traditionally the eyewitnesses and recorders of the times, are having to adapt to the enormous changes transforming the media.

The creation and popularity of the mobile internet and digital content, which offer people seemingly instant information, both true and fake, mean some journalists have been swept off course, although some have sought to find new career coordinates so they can adapt to the changes.

While some have chosen to embrace the pressure of creating click bait at the expense of their journalistic ethics, some have remained resolute in adhering to the spirit of journalism despite the pressures they face.

It is true that the world we are now in is undergoing a sea change, but this has not changed and will not change some basic principles that journalists as human beings should abide by. The changing world still needs dedicated journalists to be guardians of society and the recorders of social changes, to do such things as issue early warnings about undesirable trends, offer hope for the future and carry forward positive energy for people. This is why many journalists are respected by the public.

Despite facing material temptations and interference, most journalists still persist in their work because of their conscience and their dedication to their profession. No matter how developed it is, a society should leave room for sober-minded, and sometimes different voices. It is the mission of journalists to present to the public both the positive and negative aspects of society so as to promote social progress.

In an era of diversified information transmission, huge challenges are posed to traditional journalism by influential we media opinion leaders, which pose a huge challenge to traditional journalists. But, journalists should stay true to their mission as the spokespersons of society, should follow the changes of the times and work for the public's interests, social equity and justice.
