Our payroll and bank cards are kept in a central location in our house that we both have access to. My wife manages all of our expenses: mortgage, medical, groceries, hydro, etc. We both have an adequate monthly allowance for personal spending. It's been that way for the 9 years we've been together and has worked quite well. Never any issues. We thoroughly talked about it before getting married. We've always discussed major purchases or expenses, such as helping extended family in an emergency. My wife is a mature adult and is extremely responsible. I have compete trust in her.
