I think telling your kids about your past brings you closer to them, helps them understand you better. It does help them grow into better human beings and mature adults. My mother told me 'the facts of life' every day and the education I got from her was definitely better for me. My father was too lazy, or too embarrassed to tell me about the facts of life.
