1. Zhongshanlu Pedestrian Street

Built in 1925, Zhongshanlu Pedestrian Street is the oldest shopping street in all of Xiamen. The buildings are arcade-houses with pink and milky white as their main color schemes, which display the characteristics of modern times in China. It mainly offers Fujian and Taiwan snacks and seafood, including peanut soup, glutinous rice dumplings and pearl milk tea.

2. Gulangyu Island

When talking about Xiamen, people will think of Gulangyu Island. The island is to the southwest of Xiamen Island across the sea. Caves are battered by waves which sounds like drums and owing to this the island has been given the name Gulangyu (drums and wave island). Architecture of both Chinese and foreign styles are preserved and is known as the Exhibition of International Architecture. There are various special cuisines on Longmen Road, a romantic place with great music.

3. Nanjing Tulou

Fujian Tulou in Nanjing is a mysterious and time-honored directory which records the history of Han people migrating south. In times of war, Han people in the central plains left their homeland for the south and settled in mountainous Nanjing. To lead a stable life, they built tulous for homes and defense, which took into account the special geological environment of Fujian.

Today these tulous can be seen by the creek, in farmland and at the foot of the mountain. They are simple and serene. The unique form of the tulou draws people’s attention. Japanese architects call it ‘UFO landing on the earth and mushroom growing out of earth’.

4. Heaven for foodies

Snacks in Xiamen are an important part of city life. There are more than 200 famous ones with unique flavors which will leave an unforgettable impression. They serve as both main dish and dessert.
