Correct understanding of HK policy

The Chinese central government on Tuesday published a White Paper detailing the practice of the "One Country, Two Systems" policy in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Put forward by the Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping in the early 1980s, the policy ensured Hong Kong's smooth return to the motherland in 1997, and along with the Basic Law, it has enabled Hong Kong to remain stable and continue to prosper.

The "One Country, Two Systems" policy is in the fundamental interests of the country and people, the general and long-term interests of Hong Kong, as well as the interests of foreign investors.

And as a groundbreaking initiative, the country can constantly explore new possibilities to enrich the policy.

However, further practice of "One Country, Two Systems" and Hong Kong's economic development and democratic progress have been disturbed as some people in the region are confused in their understanding of the policy and the Basic Law, said Xinhua News Agency.

The key to understanding the policy is to realize that it is a holistic concept. The one country is the premise and basis of the two systems, and the two systems are subordinate to and derived from the one country.

Only by respecting and learning from each other can the two systems coexist harmoniously in the one country and achieve common development.

In the face of profound adjustments and changes in the economic environment both within and outside the region, Hong Kong needs to continuously enhance its competitiveness, and efforts are needed to solve the deep-seated problems that have built up over a long period of time.

Deeper exchanges and cooperation between Hong Kong and the mainland are needed, which requires better communication and coordination.

Meanwhile, it is necessary to stay alert to any attempts by outside forces to use the SAR to interfere in China's domestic affairs, and to curb the attempt made by an extremely small number of people who in collusion with outside forces seek to interfere with the implementation of the "One Country, Two Systems" policy.

A comprehensive and correct understanding and implementation of the policy and concerted efforts by people from all sectors will safeguard China's sovereignty, security and interests, and maintain long-term stability and prosperity in Hong Kong.
