Media must report responsibly over conference season

          chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2013-03-04 21:00

Reporting the proceedings and achievements of important conferences' objectively is the responsibility of all media, says an article in the 21st Century Business Herald. Excerpts:

Every March is China's conference season. The two annual sessions of the National People’s Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference are held in Beijing in this month. The two important conferences will yield many important files and policies concerning China's development in 2013. These two conferences will certainly become a focus of media nationwide.

More than 5,000 delegates come to Beijing this month. The officials of the central government and the 5,000 delegates from around China are featured heavily in the media.

The 3,000 reporters who are approved to cover the important meetings should make good use of the opportunity to report valuable information from the conference to the public, as opposed to racking their brains to look for eye-catching news about the personal lives of the conference delegates.

The media should serve as an effective communication channel connecting the public and the conferences, concentrating on important topics, reports and proceedings of the conferences that are of vital importance to the development of the country and society this year.

For example, the government's budget will be discussed by China's top power body the NPC. The media should stand on the side of the taxpayers to increase the transparency of the discussion process of the government budget and the let the people know how their money is spent.
