Xi heeds the people's concerns

Communist Party of China Central Committee General Secretary Xi Jinping's visit to Shenzhen, a special economic zone in Guangdong province, last weekend, has symbolic meaning in China. In 1992 Deng Xiaoping' visit to the city, which at the time was only a village, was s significant moment for China, and a sign for the country to push ahead with? reform and opening-up, says an article in China Business News. Xi chose Shenzhen for his first trip out of Beijing after being elected, sending a clear message that his new leadership will further promote reform as Deng did 20 years ago.

There was no traffic control in place when Xi's motorcade traveled about 150 kilometers through Shenzhen. Xi and the new leadership pledged to improve the Party and government officials' working style at the conference of Dec 4 and Xi's visit to Shenzhen demonstrated how he could put his words into action.

Xi's interaction with local officials and the people indicates that the new leaders are acutely aware of the people's needs and are determined to satisfy these needs and address the concerns of the common people.

A series of corruption cases have been recently exposed by netizens and have been dealt with in a quick and efficient manner, leaving Chinese citizens with the impression that there is a strong motivation to combat graft and abuse of power. The effect of the fight against corruption will have long-term benefits and improve governance and efficiency.
