'Unregistered employment' becoming popular with the post-90s group

          ( chinadaily.com.cn )

          Updated: 2015-12-07

There a new trend taking shape among the post-90s university graduates who have chosen to start their “career” in an “unregistered” way, sx.news.cn has reported on Dec 4, noting that ”unregistered employment” refers to working without a contract and not registered with a government labor office.

One of these unregistered people is Kang Rui, who graduated from Shanxi Normal University in economics, this past June and is running a shop online now?and says, “I never expected the business to be so hot after starting it just for pocket money. So, I decided to work full-time because it leaves me with more free time, and gives me more challenges and not a bad income.”

Kang’s online shop specializes in Shanxi local products, and, “it’s still in the trial stage but sales amount to 10,000 yuan ($1,600) per month now.”

One young woman who took the same path as Kang, named Zhang who graduated from the Shengyang Conservatory of Music last year, says she resigned from her previous job after half-a-year’s work because, “It was boring and not close to my major,”

She’s now a partner in a musical instruments shop and takes part-time jobs as a music tutor and, “Compared with the last job, I think the current one benefits me more,”

In another example, Wu Xiaoyu, a recent Shanxi grad, explains why she turned down a regular job for WeChat business (a type of e-commerce business through twitter-like social media) by saying, “First of all. It’s freer and I don’t need to ask for leave if I want to travel. And it’s freed me from complicated interpersonal relations.”

One survey has found that many university grads plan to look for unregistered employment, for example, with online shops or WeChat business; but, at the same time, most of their parents do not agree with the choice out of concerns over social security and the future.

But, in the words of one Jinzhong University teacher, in Shanxi; “As the job situation worsens, unregistered employment can help improve the employment situation, however, there are issues such as labor rights and social security that are mostly in disorder.” So, he concludes by saying that he thinks that this form of work only postpones some employment-related problems and conflicts, but suggests more policy support for it from government.
