The season of bird migration is upon us and birdwatchers, veteran and amateur alike, might want to head for Binjiang Park in Lujiazui, Shanghai's Pudong New Area, to scout some of autumn's finest feathery things.

Although it might seem strange to suggest an area more synonymous with finance than flight as a birder's paradise, the region acts as a pit stop for millions of birds migrating between Siberia and Australia. Visitors to Binjiang Park have a chance to spy as many as 400 birds a day, with a plethora of different species seeking food and shelter.

A recent report by Pudong Times listed an additional four Shanghai spots for their excellent display of plumage. These include Chongming Dongtan National Nature Reserve, North Lake of Chongming Island, Baogang Reservoir in Baoshan district, and Nanhui Dongtan wetland in Pudong New Area. Perhaps unsurprisingly, each site offers bird lovers different sighting opportunities.

Irrespective of season, Chongming Island is a bird oasis and perhaps the region's finest place for ornithologists. Over the course of the year the island is home to around 250 species of birds. Baogang Reservoir is a prime location to scout birds in winter with a variety of ducks, waders, and eagles on display. Lastly, Nanhui Dongtan is proving a seasonal favorite with 203 species of birds including herons and finches sighted already this year.

With such a diverse array of birdlife flocking to Pudong New Area, there has never been a better time to spend a weekend with a pair of binoculars in one hand and a trusty bird book in the other.
