A total of 30?experts participated in an academic symposium on culture of bricks with inscriptions and history of ancient China's Wei, Jin and Northern and Southern dynasties (AD 220-581) at the Mingzhi Hall in Jiading district of Shanghai, on Dec 8. The hall is a museum of bricks with inscriptions.
The scholars had come from the country's top research institutes and universities including the Chinese Academy of Social Science, the Fudan University, East China Normal University, Nanjing University and Jiading Museum.
They exchanged ideas about studies on bricks with inscriptions and considered that the bricks manifest the evolution of Chinese calligraphy and the origin of seal cutting. The experts also believed that the bricks are worth studying because they are embedded with ancient history.
Most bricks collected in the Mingzhi Hall are from the Wei, Jin and Northern and Southern dynasties and can be evidences for historical studies. They can also reveal some unknown history.
According to local officials, the hall currently is China's largest inscription brick museum with a collection of more than 30,000 such bricks. The inscriptions on them feature titles of emperors' reigns, auspicious words and figures.
