A joy-filled night of songs and dances rooted in northeast China has turned up the heat in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang Province. The performance raised the curtain on "Winter of the North" International Culture Festival.

The stage extravaganza was a vivid depiction of how residents in northeast China celebrate the Spring Festival.

The three provinces in northeast China--which consist of Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang--are among the coldest regions of the country. But the people there show unparalleled vigor and talent in their festival celebrations. Their folk art, including the well-known Yangge dance, can be traced back hundreds of years.

Wang Mingxi, director, said, "Tonight's show is intended to encapsulate the most unique culture from northeast China. People here are living a pristine life, but they also harbor beautiful dreams. I hope the show will open a door for others to take a closer look at the region. "

The show opened the fourth "Winter of the North" International Culture Festival that will last three months. Over that time, there will be about a hundred stage performances and dozens of art exhibitions.
