The Earth Day 2012 campaign in China is about treasuring the earth's resources and transforming the mode of economic development.

Earth Day is a day on which events are held worldwide to inspire awareness about the Earth's natural environment. It was founded in the United States on April 22, 1970, and is now coordinated globally.

50 ambassadors to share Earth Day stories

As the 43rd Earth Day approaches, ambassadors from 50 countries to China are going to share their environment stories on Beijing Radio's special program Connecting the Earth, Beijing Daily reported Wednesday.

Beijing Radio's special focuses on topics such as cherishing the earth, protecting the homeland and treasuring resources. Environmentalists and volunteers will also share their experiences in environmental activities.

Beijing to switch from coal to gas to go green

Beijing is to take action to make its coal-fired power plants and heating facilities go green amid public concern over the city's poor air quality, said a government official.

Zhang Gong, director of Beijing municipal development and reform commission, said that an estimated 80 billion yuan ($13 billion) will be invested to switch the city's coal-fired power plants and heating facilities to natural gas.

Air quality efforts lauded

The government appreciates the environmental protection work done by NGOs and looks forward to further mutual communication and understanding, the Ministry of Environmental Protection said on Friday.

"The active participation and involvement in monitoring of particulate matter pollutants illustrates that the public has increased its awareness of environmental protection," Wu Xiaoqing, deputy environmental protection minister, said at a State Council Information Office news conference.

China still targeting heavy-metal polluters

China's environmental watchdog will continue to crack down on heavy-metal pollution amid a renewed wave of lead poisoning cases in recent months, according to Wu Xiaoqing, deputy minister of environmental protection.

"Together with eight other ministries, we will scrutinize several heavy-metal industries this year, mainly targeting illegal operations in acid lead-battery manufacturing, heavy-metal smelting and processing," Wu told China Daily.
