At the 2018 China Mobile Global Partners Conference, held in Guangzhou on Dec 8, Guiyang was announced as one of the 12 5G technology application demonstration cities.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has allocated the frequency range for the three major telecommunication operators, which will now allow them to start the R&D of 5G devices.
It is estimated that the application of commercial 5G will be on trial in 2019, before being officially put into use in 2020.
The 5G communication technology features a higher data rate than current technology and will usher in an era of intelligent equipment.
As a new generation of communication technology, 5G requires upgrades of smartphones. According to China Mobile, the price of 5G smartphones will be above 8,000 yuan ($1,161) when they first hit the market, and be reduced to around 1,000 yuan following large-scale production.

The innovation center for 5G technology established by China Mobile in Guizhou will bring more possibilities to the future of 5G technology. During the trial of 5G communication in Guiyang, China Mobile will test at a low and medium frequency range to give full play of the advantages of 5G, particularly its massive device connectivity and reduced latency.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will allocate the high frequency rung to communication operators at a later stage, meaning 5G technology will have a high transmission efficiency in densely populated areas.
