The 5th China Wanfenglin Summit on Beautiful Villages was held in Xingyi city, Qianxinan Buyei and Miao autonomous prefecture on March 31, with the main topic being ways to alleviate poverty in the villages of Guizhou province.
Experts and scholars from media, agricultural universities and rural grassroots units were present to formulate a plan for enhancing the agriculture and tourism in those villages.
Qianxinan boasts fabulous pastoral and mountainous scenery, but due to its rugged environment, traditional industries such as agriculture have struggled to thrive.
"It would help these communities if they could develop a distinctive, localized industry so they could turn seemingly unfavorable resources into a boost for development”, said Tang Yuanjie, director of Farmers' Daily.
China’s top 10 most beautiful villages as designated by the Ministry of Agriculture in 2016 agreed to use their successful experiences to help 10 poverty-stricken villages in Qianxinan to rid themselves of poverty.
"The 10 villages, which developed income-increasing strategies, can set good examples for the places in most need,” Tang said.
Zhang Yuxiang, director of the Chinese Agri-produce Marketing Association said: “Supporting policies and sound infrastructure should also be available to fuel the construction of beautiful villages.”
Guizhou has long remained one of China’s poorest provinces. There were 4.9 million people living below the poverty there line by the end of 2015, accounting for 8.8 percent of the country’s total poor.
The Chinese government has set a goal of pulling 10 million residents out of poverty in 2017.
