Abstract:

The IT industry's technical standards can be good for the public welfare but they can also block competition in the related manufacturing sector. The international rules on the technical standards have shed multiple impacts on China's interest. The government often faces dilemma in making its policies. The government must be cautious in choosing the standards. The concerned departments of the Chinese government have been actively involved in policymaking regarding WLAN standards but the opportunities and risks generated from those actions must be fully recognized. It requires a lot more effort from both the government and the industry to reach a success.
