Four days after the new year, the nation was shocked by a fire that claimed seven lives at a private orphanage run by Yuan Lihai in Lankao county, Henan province, in January 2013. Yuan, a local woman in her late 40s, has provided shelter for orphans and abandoned children since 1987.
