 Xiao Qiang scrunches under the covers of his bed, his body tortured by the perils of drug addiction, in Xi'an, Sha'anxi province, Nov 14, 2010. Qiang, 46, not his real name, has been a drug addict since 1988 and spent several stints in prison for trading in illegal substances. Upon his release three months ago, the hopeless addict returned to the care of his 74-year-old mother, Zhao, who is suffering from gallbladder cancer and uses her 1,500 yuan ($226) pension to support her son and help him beat his addiction to drugs.
