Meningitis kills one more in Changchun

One patient suffering from acute meningitis in Changchun City, capital of northeast China's Jilin Province, died in a local hospital Thursday, according to the information from the provincial health bureau.

It is the first such case in this northeast China's province.

The provincial health bureau said that Ma Xiang, the patient, 34, who was a resident living on Pinghu Street in Shuangyang District, Changchun City, developed the disease on last Wednesday, with clinical symptoms such as high fever, vomiting, skin ecchymosis, plus meningeal irritation.

Ma was admitted into a community hospital late that day but was transferred to the No.1 Hospital affiliated to the Jilin University on Thursday morning after he was diagnosed to be a suspect of meningitis.

He was diagnosed by the latter hospital to suffer from meningitis. Ma succumbed to the disease there at 5:40 p.m. after antibacterial treatment proved vain.

Jilin Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported Ma's case to the national CDC and is carrying out a seven-day countermeasure under which three people who had close contacts with Ma are monitored closely.

By press time, susceptible people from the same street where Ma used to live were inoculated with meningitis vaccines.

The province also reported five other cases of meningitis in January. The five patients have been cured and are discharged from the hospitals, according to the provincial health bureau.
