third quarters. That built the Grizzlies' lead to 24 early in the third.
The lead was large enough entering the fourth that New Jersey's starters
grabbed a seat to let the reserves give it a try. The second-stringers could
never get closer than 11 in the final seconds.
New Jersey, playing without starter Richard Jefferson, lost its second
straight after a 10-game winning streak.
Vince Carter had 14 points for New Jersey, while Jason Kidd and Marc Jackson
each scored 10. Carter had scored 20 or more in 12 straight games.
The Nets forced Gasol to hit only 3-of-13 from the field and 3-of-8 from the
line for nine points. He missed short jumpers, outside shots and hit the side of
the backboard on one baseline drive.
In the early stages, the Nets defensively pushed Gasol away for the basket,
disrupting the Memphis offense. Gasol was taking passes 15 feet from the basket
instead of deep in the post or along the baseline.
Gasol took only three shots through the first 20 minutes, missing all of
them. That lack of offense and 11 turnovers allowed the Nets to stay close
through most of the first half.
But New Jersey was having its own problems with 13 turnovers and 30 percent
shooting, including Kidd and Carter connecting on a combined 6-of-21. The Nets
scored only 11 points in the second quarter, allowing Memphis to close the half
with 15 straight points over the final 4 minutes and carry a 47-29 leader into
halftime.
Wade helps Heat defeat SuperSonics 117-104
SEATTLE - Dwyane Wade recorded his second triple-double in two weeks with 15
points, 10 rebounds and a career-high 14 assists, and the Miami Heat beat the
Seattle SuperSonics 117-104 on Friday night.
Wade shot just 4-of-14 in
his third career triple-double. He had 19 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists on
Jan. 4 against the Hornets.
After dropping the first two games of their season-high, seven-game road
trip, the Heat have won the last three, this time with an impressive offensive
performance against the league's worst defense.
