Clippers sign Russian teen Korolev
LOS ANGELES (AFP) - The Los Angeles Clippers signed Russian teenager Yaroslav Korolev, their first-round selection in the National Basketball Association draft. Terms were not disclosed, but as the 12th pick in the draft, Korolev will receive 2.947 million dollars over two years under the rookie salary scale. The Clippers hold options for a third and fourth year. Despite being just 18 years old, Korolev has considerable pro and international experience. In July, he averaged 16.3 points and 7.5 rebounds in eight games for Russia in the Under-18 European Championship. Last season, he averaged 15.9 points and 5.8 rebounds in the Russian Junior League and saw brief action with European powerhouse CSKA Moscow, with whom the Clippers arranged a buyout. "I am very pleased we were able to come to terms with CSKA to allow him to come to Los Angeles," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "I think having him here to learn our system and work with our coaches on an individual basis will speed up the learning process for him to play at the NBA level."
