U.N. kicks off summit with call to action
          (AP)
          Updated: 2005-09-14 21:45

A summit marking the 60th anniversary of the United Nations opened Wednesday with an appeal for collective action to prevent conflict and genocide and to protect human rights, the Associated Press reported.

The U.N. General Assembly meets, Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005, at the United Nations. With the U.N. summit a day away, negotiators tried to agree Tuesday on a watered-down plan for reforming the United Nations, having abandoned many of the sweeping changes recommended by Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Facing more than 150 world leaders, summit co-chair Goran Persson of Sweden warned that millions of lives will be lost if significant steps aren't taken now to fight global poverty "and we will pass on a more unfair and more unsafe world to the next generation."
