At least nine wounded in grenade attack on Chechen police headquarters

Unidentified assailants opened fire with a grenade launcher on Chechnya's police headquarters on Tuesday, lightly wounding seven Interior Ministry soldiers, the Russian Interior Ministry said.

The attackers drove up to the building in the capital, Grozny, in a car and shelled the building from a distance of 800-1,200 meters (2,640-3,960 feet) for five to seven minutes, said Roman Shchekotin, a spokesman for the southern regional branch of the ministry.

He said the seven soldiers suffered shrapnel wounds. The building suffered minor damage, the ITAR-Tass news agency said.

Police have launched a search for the assailants, Shchekotin said.
