World's top athletes going for diamonds in Swedish meet

"If the weather holds up, and it's not raining, there will be a lot of excited athletes who want to run very fast," Gatlin said. "I want to come out there and break the stadium record, even more, a world record, and have this build to Helsinki (the world championships)."

Maurice Greene, the former world record-holder from the United States, set the stadium record of 9.87 in 1999.

Wariner, the Olympic 400 champion, and rising 400 hurdles star Kerron Clement will compete for the first and only time before the worlds in the one-lap race.

"My main goal is to run a good race before the world championships and hopefully come out on top," said Wariner. "I know they award diamonds for stadium records and I hope I can get one."

Clement, 19, beat Michael Johnson's 10-year world 400 indoor record last winter. In June, he posted the seventh fastest 400 hurdles time at the U.S. Championships.

Other Olympic champions competing include Stefan Holm (high jump), Sweden's Carolina Kluft (heptathlon) and Joanna Hayes (100 hurdles) of the United States.

Kluft withdrew from the long jump with a sore knee, but will run in the 4x100 relay.

Forty Olympic medalists from the Athens Olympics have entered the meet.
