Sex ratio of HIV carriers reaches 2:1

The male to female ratio of HIV/AIDS carriers in China has risen from 5:1 in the 1990s to 2:1, and even 1:1 in certain regions, according to Ministry of Health statistics.

Women now were particularly vulnerable in the transmission of the disease from high-risk groups through sex, said a ministry-issued material.

"Female AIDS patients also usually have less chance to get treatments or help," the material said.

An anti-AIDS campaign calling for more care to women was recently launched by several government departments, including the Department of Publicity of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, the Ministry of Health, the National Population and Family Planning Commission and the All-China Women's Federation.

China has an estimated 840,000 people infected with the AIDS virus. The United Nations' AIDS agency has warned that China could have as many as 10 million people infected by 2010 if it did not take urgent action.
