China beat Group B favorite Turkey 2-1 with a goal in injury time at the World Youth Championship on Saturday, and Ukraine beat Panama 3-1.

Zhao Xuri scored with a powerful shot from about from 30 meters in the closing moments of the game.

"We were a little bit lucky at the end today," China coach Eckhard Kraut said.

Tan Wangsong gave China the lead in the 17th minute, and the Turks equalized in the 84th when substitute Gokhan Gulec scored off a rebound.

In Group C, favorite Spain downed Morocco 3-1 while Chile crushed Honduras 7-0.

The United States pulled off a major upset at the World Youth Championship on Saturday, downing tournament favorite Argentina 1-0 in the opening Group D match.

In the other Group D match, Germany beat Egypt 2-0.

Chad Barrett scored the winning goal for the United States in the 39th minute with a bouncing header that hit the roof of the net past goalkeeper Oscar Ustari.

"It was so sweet," said United States striker Freddy Adu, who missed a penalty in the 70th. "I knew we could win if we kept it together, and we did."

The win puts the United States in position to advance from the toughest group in the competition, which is for under-20 teams.

Despite dominating the midfield, the Argentines failed to convert their chances.

Striker Gustavo Oberman hit the post in the 19th minute with a drive that had United States 'keeper Quentin Westberg beaten.

Argentina star Lionel Messi, who was surprisingly benched for the first half, threatened several times in the second.

"There's no excuse for this defeat," Messi said.

Adu could have put the game away in the 70th, but his penalty shot rebounded off the inside of the post.

Later Saturday, Germany substitute Nicky Adler scored in the 75th to break the game open.

Egypt lost one player to a red card and another to injury in the last 10 minutes, and Marvin Matip scored the second goal for Germany in extra time.

Chile dominated the badly outclassed Honduras from the start, with Ricardo Parada and Jose Fuenzalinda each scoring two goals each.

The final groups have their openers Sunday, with defending champion Brazil against Nigeria in Group F. Also, Italy meets Columbia in Group E.
