Timberwolves fire Saunders, appoint McHale coach

The slumping Minnesota Timberwolves have fired coach Flip Saunders and named vice-president Kevin McHale as his successor, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported Saturday.

Former Boston Celtics favorite McHale will coach the team for the remainder of the season, said the newspaper.

After reaching the Western Conference finals last year, the Timberwolves have struggled to a disappointing 25-26 record this season.

With league MVP Kevin Garnettleading the way, the Timberwolves were once again expected to challenge for an NBA title, but they have lost seven of their last eight contests.

Saunders, who had a 411-326 record at Minnesota, took over in December 1995 and was the second longest-serving coach in the league.

He steered the Timberwolves to the post-season on eight occasions but went out in the first round seven times.
