Putin hails bilateral strategic partnership

MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted a senior Chinese official on Wednesday, hailing the development of bilateral ties and calling for further joint efforts in defending world peace and stability.

The Russian-Chinese strategic partnership has witnessed comprehensive development at all levels in recent years, Putin told visiting State Councillor Tang Jiaxuan, saying that Russia has given priority to the development of co-operation with China.

He noted that being permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, Russia and China should intensify their consultations in dealing with world affairs to tackle all kinds of threats and challenges in an aim to protect world peace and regional stability.

The Russian president called on both sides to promote political dialogue and maintain high-level communications to facilitate more substantial achievements in some key fields, including the energy, economy and trade sectors.

Putin confirmed that Russia will stick to the one-China policy, resolutely opposes any forms of "Taiwan independence," and supports China's efforts in safe-guarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Tang thanked Russia for its unswerving support of China on the Taiwan question and on the anti-secession law.

In Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said yesterday that China did not provide any financing to Russian oil firms to purchase a stake in Yukos Oil Company of Russia.

It is reported that the Russian state oil firm Rosneft said that China had agreed to pay US$6 billion as prepayment for oil supplies but the money has not been used to finance the purchase of Yukos.
