Shanxi cuts coke output by 40 million tons

North China's Shanxi Province, the largest coal and coke producer in the country, has closed down about 553 coke makers and cut 40 million tons of output this year to harness pollution and streamline the industry.

The move has helped reduce more than 60,000 tons of soot discharge and 100,000 tons of sulfur dioxide emission, sources with the Shanxi provincial government told Xinhua on Monday.

Shanxi imposed higher fees on coke producers for their pollution emission in late May, 2004, which compelled small firms to close and bigger ones to employ more environment-friendly technologies in order to minimize pollution.

Local coke makers have so far contributed more than 100 million yuan (US$12million) of emission charges to the provincial treasury, according to the government sources.

Relevant statistics show China cut 45.55 million tons of coke production in 2003, and it aims to maintain 260 million tons of annual production around 2006, which may satisfy the demand for its steel-making industry and other sectors.
