Spain soccer fans fined for racist chants

Two soccer fans were fined $7,900 by Spanish authorities and banned from stadiums for five months for making racial taunts against a star player for Barcelona.

Spain's Anti-Violence Commission said on its Web site Friday the two fans made monkey gestures and hooted whenever Samuel Eto'o, a black player, got the ball during Saturday's game against Albacete. The two fans, whose names were not released, were identified by police after spectators complained about them.

On Tuesday, the Spanish soccer federation fined Albacete almost $800.

The fines come amid increasing concern over racism in Spanish soccer. Last Friday, European soccer's governing body fined Real Madrid more than $13,000 for racist behavior by its fans at the Champions League game against the German team Bayer Leverkusen on Nov. 23.

Earlier this week, the soccer federation initiated disciplinary proceedings against national team coach Luis Aragones for his remarks about Arsenal star Thierry Henry.
