Between yuppy and hippy

In the world of fashion, the male model seems always to be in a supporting role on the T-stage. But to Yang Ziming, the designer of Cabbeen, a Hong Kong-based fashion brand, men's wear is everything.

At the opening ceremony to introduce Cabbeen's new flagship store in Shanghai on Nanjing Xilu, the designer brought over 30 pieces of men's wear which are representative of his classic and popular works over the past few years. Chinese super models Hu Dong, Xue Fei and Zhao Jingnan displayed the fashions.

In Yang's typical style, all the pieces are exquisite - even if they look a little overstated - but never vulgar. Details are highlighted, such as unique zips, pockets, embroidery and asymmetric cuts.

"Cabbeen sticks to designs with its own characteristics and most importantly, they are original creations," Yang said. "What I pursue is a third type of cultural wandering between yuppy and hippy - we call it 'unrestrained Cabbeen style'."

As the designer said, all the fashion items are designed in an unrestrained way and decorated with detailed and luxurious ornaments: sparkling artificial diamonds cover the chest, bright-coloured beads form patterns of butterflies and dragons, various tiny accessories jingle on every part of the clothing.

All the denims are refined through a washing and wearing process and they are matched with "doodling" on T-shirts and asymmetrical-cut tops with tassels.

To make a breakthrough in the design of men's wear, the designer has also applied many bright-coloured fabrics to men's shirts. Floral cotton cloth and embroidered jacquard, widely used in woman's fashions, can be seen in Cabbeen's men's shirts.

"My aim is to launch a little revolution in men's wear and make Cabbeen a cultural brand appealing to international trendy taste," Yang said.
