Three American soldiers were killed on Sunday in Najaf province, scene of fighting between U.S. forces and Shi'ite militiamen holed up in the holy city of Najaf, the military said.

"Three U.S. soldiers attached to the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit were killed as a result of enemy action in the An Najaf province Aug. 15," said the statement, issued on Monday.

U.S. forces fought sporadic clashes with fighters loyal to radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr on Sunday, following the breakdown of talks aimed at ending an 12-day uprising in Najaf, which has spread to some other Shi'ite cities in Iraq.

The deaths brought to at least 697 the number of U.S. servicemen killed in action in Iraq since the start of last year's U.S.-led invasion.
