The number of imported cars through Tianjin Port, North China, reached 21,502 in the first three months of this year, a rise of 13.9 percent over the same 2003 period, the latest statistics have shown.

According to the Tianjin Customs, these imported automobiles was valued at US$610 million, an increase of 45.1 percent year-on-year.

Tianjin is one of China's seven ports authorized to import automobiles from other countries. Car import through the port accounts for about 40 percent of China's total.

The Republic of Korea (ROK) was the leading auto import market of Tianjin port in the first quarter. The number of cars imported from ROK was 8,807, up 16.2 percent year-on-year, and accounting for 41 percent of the total import cars through the port.

Of the total imports, 7,242 automobiles came from Japan, a rise of 9.8 percent, and 3,254 cars were Germany-made, an increase of 74.6 percent year on year.

Customs statistics indicated that Beijing imported 11,786 autos, or 54.8 percent of the total imports through the Tianjin port. The remaining cars went to Tianjin municipality and East China's Shandong province.
