A delegation of the National Basketball Association club owners, executives and sponsors plus US government and business leaders will visit China in October in connection with two NBA pre-season games in the most populous country.

The Asia Society, a New York-based non-profit public education organization aiming to improve US-Asia relations, will sponsor the trip when Chinese star Yao Ming and the Houston Rockets play against Sacramento Kings in their NBA pre-season games in China.

"The NBA China Games are a significant step in our relationship with Chinese basketball and Chinese fans," NBA commissioner David Stern said.

The NBA China Games, the first time in China since 1979 when Washington Bullets played exhibitions against China, will be played in Yao's homeplace of Shanghai on October 14 and in Beijing on October 17.

"We hope to contribute to the development of the NBA as a force for building economic, cultural and political ties between the US and countries around the world," said Asia Society president Nicolas Platt.
