Super Bowl: Patriots lead Panthers 14-10
          ( 2004-02-02 10:17) (Agencies)

A five-yard scoring strike from Tom Brady to David Givens with 18 seconds left in the second quarter helped give the New England Patriots a 14-10 lead over the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl XXXVIII Sunday.

On third and one, Brady found Givens wide open in the middle of the end zone to cap a six-play, 78-yard drive that took up only 49 seconds.

But the Panthers refused to quit, taking advantage of a poor kick by the Patriots and using a 50-yard field goal by John Kasay as time expired in the half to trim the lead to 14-10.

The game was scoreless for most of the half, setting a Super Bowl record for the longest drought in the title game.

Brady delivered a five-yard scoring toss to Deion Branch as the Patriots grabbed a 7-0 lead with 3:05 left before intermission.

But Jake Delhomme tossed a 39-yard scoring strike to Steve Smith two minutes later as the Panthers tied the score 7-7.

Delhomme found Smith streaking down the left sideline and lofted the ball over Tyrone Poole with 1:07 to go.
