AC Milan takes lead from Roma
          ( 2004-01-30 09:20) (Agencies)

AC Milan took over first place from AS Roma in the Italian Serie A on Wednesday with a 2-1 win against Siena.

Brazilian playmaker Kaka and Danish striker Jon Dahl Tomasson scored for the European champion in a makeup match that was rescheduled from Dec. 14 when Milan was preparing for the Intercontinental Cup.

Siena had a penalty shot saved by Milan’s Brazilian goalkeeper Dida and Norwegian striker Tore Andre Flo scored for the visitor at San Siro in the 87th.

With 45 points, Milan now has a two-point lead on Roma (43) and a five-point gap ahead of defending champion Juventus (40).

In the 38th minute, Kaka took a pass from Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko beyond the penalty arc, entered the area, evaded a couple of defenders and launched a precise shot that Siena ’keeper Generoso Rossi could not reach.

Four minutes later, Siena was awarded a penalty when Milan captain Paolo Maldini tugged on the arm of the towering Flo. A diving save by Dida off countryman Fernando Menegazzo’s penalty preserved the lead for Milan.

Tomasson scored in the 54th on a close-range rebound off a long shot from Cristian Brocchi.

Flo took a pass from Roberto D’Aversa and converted a short shot while Milan’s Danish defender Martin Laursen could do nothing but watch.

Kaka nearly put Milan ahead in the 29th on a long shot that was stopped by Rossi and Shevchenko came close to increasing his lead atop the season’s scoring list just before the halftime whistle when Rossi used a diving save to deflect his shot wide.

Brocchi, who had an excellent performance despite suffering bruises in two separate collisions, had a chance to make it 3-0 on a sharply angled shot that Rossi saved with the end of his foot in the 71st.

Siena remained in 10th place with 21 points. The Tuscan squad, making its Serie A debut in its 100th year of existence, is still searching for its first road win in the top division.
