Two major gas field blowouts had occurred in China before the Tuesday blowout in Kaixian County, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality:

March 22, 1998: 11 people dead, 13 poisoned and one injured in a gas field blowout in Kaijiang County of southwest China's Sichuan Province.

Sept. 28, 1992: six people dead and 24 others poisoned in a gas field blowout in Zhaoxian County of north China's Hebei Province.
