Izutani Haruka from Japan, Arnaud De Schaetzen from Belgium and Chin Kah Ying from Singapore won first prizes at the Second Chinese Bridge - Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students.

The three first prizewinners were awarded titles of Chinese Ambassador and given Chinese Bridge scholarships for a degree study in China. State Councilor Chen Zhili, Minister of Education Zhou Ji and leaders of the China State Leading Group for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language attended the ceremony held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing yesterday.

Thirteen people from United Kingdom, Russia, Republic of Korea, Australia, Germany, Belarus, Viet Nam, Canada, Sweden and the United States won second and third prizes. They were respectively awarded Chinese Bridge scholarships for a four to six-week study and a 15-day tour in China.

The competition features the theme of China in the new century. Organized by National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (NOCFL), the event drew sixty-three contestants from 28 countries.

"Chinese Bridge" Competition, inaugurated in 2002, is an annual event aimed at promoting exchange and cooperation between China and other countries.

The theme of next year's competition will be China with a brilliant culture.
