Brazil, Argentina get wins at World Youth Championship of soccer
          ( 2003-11-29 14:50) (Xinhua)

Argentina and Brazil finished their opening matches with wins in Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates, on Friday in the World Youth Championship of soccer.

Defending champion Argentina overcame Spain, another top contender, 2-1 in Group B, while Brazil defeated Canada 2-0 in Group C. By beating Spain, one of Europe's top teams, Argentina is in a commanding position heading into Monday's match against Uzbekistan.

Spain took the lead in the 24th minute from Gabi's shooting, while Leandro Fernandez helped Argentina come from behind by scoring twice in the second half.

Brazil's two goals came at the second half, Carvalho put Brazil ahead with a 50th-minute score and Nilmar expanded the lead to two goals six minutes from the end.

In the other Group B match, Mali made an injury-time winner to beat Uzbekistan 3-2.

Australia tied the Czech Republic 1-1 in another Group C match, while Burkina Faso defeated Panama 1-0 in Group A.

Also on Saturday, England takes on Egypt and Japan plays Colombia in Group D; the Ivory Coast plays Ireland and Mexico faces Saudi Arabia in Group E; while Germany plays South Korea and US faces Paraguay on Saturday in Group F.

The three-week event is regarded as an important arena in discovering some of the sport's brightest young stars. The tournament has been the rising ground for superstars like Argentina's Diego Maradona, Portugal's Luis Figo and England's Michael Owen.
